Jatropha (Jatropha curcas L.) is an oil seed species, adaptive to different climate and soil conditions. It is known due to its high-oil-content seed, being an option for biodiesel production and presenting competitive yields under irrigated condition. This study was developed in an experimental area located in a humid subtropical region of Brazil and the objective was to evaluate Jatropha’s energy balance under irrigation and rainfed condition during the first four years of its cycle. First, the material flows were determined, which supported the calculation of, energy input and output flows were obtained. These were used to determine the energy indices: energy balance (EB), and energy return on investment (EROI) for both conditions. Fertilizers had the... |

The direct estimation of energy flow through marine meiobenthic populations poses several difficulties, mainly relating to sampling problems. The usefulness of some indirect estimation methods is discussed. Direct production estimates and respiration measurements for three brackish water crustacean populations are given, indicating a relative constant proportion between population production and respiration. The production: assimilation ratio for these populations fluctuates between 0.3 and 0.4. This is contrasted to literature data revealing much higher production: assimilation ratios as determined in the laboratory for nematode populations. Using data on laboratory cultures of the nematode Monhystera disjuncta some factors that can... |

We examined the dynamics of fish species and how they relate to species assemblage coherence in the heavily exploited Georges Bank fish community. Coherence is defined as reduced temporal variability of total assemblage biomass. We assumed that a higher degree of compensation hence coherence occurs within competitively coupled species assemblages; therefore, fisheries may directly alter the dynamics of certain targeted species sizes but assemblage structure will be relatively more stable owing to compensatory interactions. Species-sizes were grouped, based on negative covariance coupling in biomass time series from survey data. Assemblages representing benthic feeders were clearly identified by this method; furthermore, the most heavily exploited... |
